“It is with great pleasure that I announce that my dear friends, David & Augusta Kantra, will be leading a 200 hour yoga teacher training in 2014. The Kantra’s are passionate professionals with decades of experience working with others to effect positive change. I have worked closely with them for the last several years, and can honestly say that I do not know of two more gifted or qualified individuals leading yoga teacher trainings in the United States. The work they did with the 2013 yoga teacher training class was powerful evidence of how they’ve been able to translate their extensive experience in the mental health field into effective leadership in the yoga classroom. I can say without reservation that the training they will be offering in 2014 will be highly rewarding for anyone interested in learning more about yoga. Whether you plan to go on to teach yoga or not, this will be an experience you do not want to miss!
~Namaste, Rolf Gates
This program is a 200-hour Vinyasa Teacher Training affiliated with Rolf Gates Yoga. Rolf is the author of the acclaimed book on yogic philosophy “Meditations from the Mat: Daily Reflections on the Path of Yoga” (Random House). He is an internationally renowned yoga teacher and yoga teacher trainer.
This training will be no less than a transformative process! It will strongly emphasize mindfulness, meditation, and the philosophical underpinnings of yoga. Yoga has been referred to as the science of life, and rightfully so. It is a science of the body, mind, and spirit. All of these aspects will be strongly addressed in this training.
This 200-hour training is a mentally, physically and emotionally challenging process designed to enable serious students of life/yoga (mind, body, and spirit) to become inspired teachers and students. Each participant will strengthen and deepen her/his practice. You will practice asana, meditation, and pranayama (breath awareness) to the point of proficiency and beyond. Your knowledge of yoga theory will deepen to the point that it becomes a core aspect of the fabric of your life.
You do not have to have extensive experience with yoga to do this training. We all start from where we are. Whether or not you aspire to ever “teach” yoga, rest assured that what you learn will influence how you live, talk and behave. This training is not just about teaching yoga, it’s about LIVING your yoga. This training will enhance, enrich and change your life – thus the lives of the people in your life! You will be encouraged to stretch beyond your self-imposed limits and reach into the potential that IS you.
You will learn how to teach classes that combine a consistent therapeutic vision with the inspired spontaneity that is the hallmark of Vinyasa Yoga. You will develop a thorough understanding of the elements of the therapeutic principles of yoga and be able to design a class or teach a pose in such a manner that your students will immediately embody those principles.
If you have physical limitations, this training is not off limits to you. We do request that you be able to stay with the asana sessions in their entirety even if some of that time is in child’s pose or seated. Often, it is when we come up against our own limitations (frustrations, fears, etc.) that we learn best how to help someone with theirs. You will not be practicing while you teach, so physical limitations will not interfere with that.
From Rolf Gates: “Claude Debusse says, ‘Music is the space between the notes.’ Vinyasa Yoga expresses that part of us that celebrates the space between the notes. A typical class will move from simple to complex poses, from standing poses and balancing poses, to back-bends, inversions, and hip openers. The teacher and students take this simple formula and make it their own day by day. No two classes are ever alike yet the intention behind the class is always the same. The genius of Vinyasa Yoga is not found in its approach to alignment or sequencing, but rather in the rhythm with which alignment and sequencing unfold. Anchored in the unseen aspects of an asana class, Vinyasa Yoga is uniquely accommodating to the evolution of a teacher; allowing her to bring all that she has learned and all that she is into her classroom. The result is a class that is at once consistent and inspired.
We want to bring special attention to the interplay between the physical and the metaphysical: A yoga class is a three dimensional story that unfolds to the rhythm of the breath. The art of teaching is the art of telling that story. Each of us, always, has a song to sing, a story to tell. Of necessity much of what we will be working on will be technical in nature but all of what we do together will be dedicated to supporting you in singing your song.”

Attendance: This is a 200hr Certification process. We are held to all of the rules of the Yoga Alliance as a Registered Yoga School (RYS). All of the sessions and assignments are to that purpose and are therefore required in order to successfully complete this program. What we are asking of you is that you are seriously committed to this process and that you do your very best. Over and above that, is that you apply yourself to this process in the way you would want your students to apply themselves when under your tutelage.
Props needed: You will need to have, and bring with you to each meeting, a mat, two blocks, a strap, a yoga blanket and a rectangular bolster.
Required and recommended reading: This list will evolve! That being said, we will start with the texts,”Meditations from the Mat” by Rolf Gates (this will be included in the cost of the program), “The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success” by Deepak Chopra, “The Yamas and Niyamas: Exploring Yoga’s Ethical Practice” by Deborah Adele, and “How Yoga Works” by Geshe Michael Roach and Christie McNally. These three books will be the texts we will use at the beginning. We will likely include several more books (some as reference and some for reading) once we begin training, and we will use selected articles as well.
